Canada

National laws:

Canada has an extensive set of laws when it comes to the safe transport of children in vehicles. These vary depending on which of the 13 provinces you find yourself in. Here are the laws for each:

Alaska

State laws:

All children must ride in some form of child car seat until the age of eight, or until they are 4 feet (ft) 9 inches (“) tall and weigh 65lbs or more. Before that age, a child should be placed in the right kind of seat according to the table below.

Arizona

State laws:

Arkansas

State laws:

The rules in Arkansas state that those six and under who weigh less than 60lbs must use a federally approved car or booster seat. This should be appropriate for their age group.

California

State laws:

Children in California must all ride in a rear-facing car seat from birth until the age of two. From two through to the age of eight, they can transition to a forward-facing seat or booster seat that they comfortably fit in. Once they reach the age of eight, or weigh 65lbs and are 4ft 9” or taller, they can use regular seatbelts. All kids should also travel in the back seat of a vehicle until the age of 12 when possible.

Colorado

State laws:

The law in Colorado suggests that all babies ride in a rear-facing child seat until they are either two years of age or weigh 40lbs. If a child weighs more than this, they can use a forward-facing seat. If they weigh 40lbs and are over four years of age, they may be placed in a booster seat.

Connecticut

State laws:

For kids aged two or younger, it’s required they travel in a rear-facing child seat. They can move into a forward facing seat from the age of two, as long as they weigh 30lbs or more. When they hit the age of five, and weigh 40lbs or more, they can move into a booster seat. From the age of eight and the weight of 65lbs they can use a regular seatbelt.

Delaware

State laws:

All children in Delaware must travel in a rear-facing seat until the age of two. They can move into a forward-facing seat from ages two-to-four, as long as they weigh at least 30lbs. When they reach age four and weigh at least 40lbs, they can move into a booster seat. From here, they need to stay in the booster seat until they reach the maximum height and weight specifications for that seat.

District of Columbia (DC)

State laws:

All children under the age of eight must be fitted in some kind of child car seat in DC. Those aged less than two who weigh under 20lbs must be in a rear-facing seat. There are no laws governing the use of forward and booster seats beyond that, other than that parents should follow the maximum restrictions as laid out by the seat itself. Rough age guidelines are provided below.

Florida

State laws:

All children under the age of five must use some form of child seat. All children are able to use a regular seatbelt once they reach a weight of 80lbs and a height of 4ft 9”. Prior to this, law only states that a child cannot have exceeded the maximum weight and height as laid out by the car seat manufacturer.

Hawaii

State laws:

While there are no weight and height restrictions on most child car seats in Hawaii, age plays a big factor in what kind of seat a little one needs. That said, from the height of 4ft 9” and age 10 upwards, they can use a regular seatbelt. All children must also ride in the rear of a vehicle when possible until the age of 13.

Idaho

State laws:

All children under the age of seven or who are less than 4ft 9” tall must use a child car seat. Prior to this, kids must travel according to age and weight. Illinois

State laws:

Louisiana

State laws:

North Carolina

Virginia

State laws:

All kids under the age of two must ride in a rear-facing seat. The law says that all kids from two-to-eight need to be placed in a seat which is fitting for their size. When a child turns eight, or reaches 4ft 9” in height, they can use a regular seatbelt.
